Matariki Calendar 2012

Matariki Calendar 2012

Matariki Calendar 2012

Each year, I have been contracted by Native Council to design and produce the Matariki Calendar for Mana Recruitment and the Māori Pacific Job Board, celebrating the Māori New Year. The Matariki Calendar consists of illustrated whakatauki or proverbs across each month and lately the illustrations and their respective whakatauki in a year have followed a consistent theme. It is something that clients look forward to receiving each year.

For Māori, the new year begins in June with the rising of the constellation of Matariki in the sky. Matariki is a small star cluster whose appearance in the north eastern pre-dawn sky in late May, early June marks the start of a new phase of life. Matariki can be translated in two ways – Mata Riki (Tiny eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God). Either way the eyes are thought to watch over the land and its people.

Celebrations most often begin at the next new moon after Matariki has risen. The exact timing varies from year to year but usually occurs during the month of June. Historically, Matariki arrived at the end of the harvest and was a time of plenty for our ancestors. The kumara and other root foods had been gathered. The migration of fish such as moki and korokoro made Matariki a time of bountiful catches. Visitors were showered with gifts of specially preserved eel, birds and other delicacies. It was a time to fill the storage houses (pātaka kai) with food and for whānau and friends to come together, acknowledge the successes of the past year, and look towards the year ahead.

The theme for the Matariki 2012-2013 Calendar was on our native and endemic birdlife (nga manu) for which our country is well known. All the whakatauki chosen made mention of Aotearoa’s birdlife in general or speaks of a specific manu.

Graphic Design

Layout of design elements, bilingual calendar and whakatauki text around manu illustration.
Developing systems to identify important calendar dates which are all listed on the calendar cover.

Illustration

Conceptual drawing and research in creating illustrations based on various whakatauki (Maori proverbs)
Vector based illustrations allowing space for whakatauki and the name of the specific manu.

Packaging Design

In the original brief, the calendar needed to be able to sit unassisted on a desktop or table to be easily viewed and fit comfortably into a DLE-sized envelope for postage. To achieve this I created a simple folding cover that inserts back into itself forming an a-frame. The cover works in a similar manner to a horizontal gatefold brochure when close to protect the calendar pages inside. Over the years the design has been modified slightly to allow for greater strength and durability.

Hui-a-tau Booklet 2014 – Toi Tangata

Hui-a-tau Booklet 2014 – Toi Tangata

Hui-a-tau Booklet 2014 – Toi Tangata

The annual hui facilitated by Toi Tangata (formerly Te Hotu Manawa Maori) and hosted by Orakei Marae, coincided with the launch of the Toi Tangata rebrand and new strategic direction within their sector and also included the introduction of two new education resources –  Toi Te Kupu (Nutrition and Health Maori Language Resource) and Toi Piki (Online Food, Fitness and Fatloss Tool).
This hui is a platform for discussing, developing and implementing successful Maori approaches to whanau flourishing. Maori nutrition, fitness and positive health principles were the focus this year for developing and building healthy whanau.

This action-packed 3 day hui-a-tau was filled with inspiring speakers, workshops, healthy kai and physical activity and looked like a fun and fulfilling experience for all involved.

I was tasked to create the Hui-a-tau information booklet that outlined the programme and activities available throughout the event and also informed the reader of Toi Tangata as an organisation, it’s team members, the purpose of the event, the history of the hosting marae, Orakei Marae and of those who would be presenting and running workshops.

You can read more about the event on Toi Tangata’s page here.

I, George Nepia – Tawata Productions

I, George Nepia – Theatrical Production

Written by Hone Kouka and directed by Jason Te Kare, this multi-award winning production is a must-see. I, George Nepia celebrates the life of an East Coast boy who became one of New Zealand’s most revered rugby players. A farmer, a singer, a rebel, a husband, a father, an invincible.

“When I hear others debating who will play fullback for the Kingdom of Heaven versus the rest, I turn to stone. It is not me a question of whether Nepia was the best fullback in history. It is a question of which of the others is fit to lace up his Cotton Oxford boots.”
– Denzil Batchelor, English Rugby Journalist.

For this production I created a range of advertising solutions from the supplied image for two separate production seasons. Some of these advertising solutions included, billboards, banners, posters, postcards and flyers.

Photography & Retouching

Editing and manipulation of supplied image to create suitable graphic that could be used across multiple media formats and a wide range of sizes.

International Volunteer Managers Day

International Volunteer Managers Day

International Volunteer Managers Day 2013

International Volunteer Managers (IVM) Day is held on 5 November every year. This is a day where organisations worldwide celebrate the skills, motivation and preparation that their Volunteer Manager’s put toward thousands of causes each year. Volunteering NZ (VNZ) develop toolkits for organisations to celebrate IVM Day within their own communities.

Organisations across the globe celebrated their Volunteer Manager’s to mark their contribution. The international theme for IVM Day 2013 was: Connecting and Inspiring. In 2013, VNZ released a theme that is specific to New Zealand. The whakatauki VNZ used to promote IVM Day 2013 was: Ma mua ka kite a muri, Ma muri ka ora a mua – meaning, Those who lead give sight to those who follow, Those who follow give life to those who lead.
As this is an international day of recognition and celebration we were required to make our advertising materials consistent in some way with that of the international event. We choose to keep the colours used internationally and also kept our designs consistent with the earlier National Volunteer Week advertising material we created.

As a part of the resource toolkits and advertising for the International Volunteer Managers Day 2013 we were tasked to create a range of different creative solutions.

Logo & Identity Design

Volunteering NZ required an event-specific logo that would;

Incorporate the symbology of the Harakeke (New Zealand Flax) in their logo
Be similar to the previously created National Volunteer Week logo I had created earlier
Be in harmony with the selected whakatauki that encompassed the event

Graphic Design

As a part of the resource toolkits and advertising for the celebration and for local organisations to use, Volunteering NZ required the following solutions;

Facebook cover banners
Website banners
Thank you cards
Posters

Illustration

Volunteering NZ required a simple yet strong graphic for use throughout all the creative solutions and that would also draw on and add to what I had previously created for the National Volunteer Week.

National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week 2013 – Te Wiki Tūao a Motu

National Volunteer Week (previously known as Volunteer Awareness Week) is a nationwide event co-ordinated annually by Volunteering New Zealand (VNZ). Tūao is a Maori word that describes volunteering and captures the spirit of giving time for a cause. Events and celebrations are held across New Zealand to recognise the invaluable contribution made by volunteers. Each year VNZ announces the theme and provides a resource kit to assist their member organisations with local and organisational celebrations.

The translation of the NVW into Maori for the first time recognises the desire of Volunteering NZ to acknowledge Maori and the many other ethnicities in New Zealand who are volunteers.
The theme for NVW 2013 is: “He tāngata, He tāngata, He tāngata!” Translated as “It is people, it is people, it is people!”
The theme has been chosen to acknowledge and remind us that volunteering is all about people.

As a part of the resource kits and advertising for the National Volunteer Week we were tasked to create a range of different creative solutions.
Volunteering NZ were so happy with 2 of the graphic options that they couldn’t decide and chose to use both!

Logo & Identity Design

NVW required a unique logo that would both incorporate a their symbol of the New Zealand Flax or Harakeke as it is known in Māori and to also be in line with the selected whakatauki that encompassed the event.

Graphic Design

As a part of the resource kits and advertising for the celebration and for local organisations to use, Volunteering NZ required the following solutions;

Facebook cover banners
Website banners
Volunteer certificates
Postcards
Posters
